How to keep paragraph spacing in a caption

The aim is a caption whose paragraphs survive the paste, not one that looks right while you are typing it. Write it plainly, space it here, and move it across in a single action.

1. 1Write the caption with ordinary blank lines between paragraphs, the way you would in any notes app.
2. 2Paste it into the box above. Every non-empty line becomes a paragraph, so it does not matter how many blank lines you left between them.
3. 3Start with single spacing. One invisible line between paragraphs is what the app's own spacing looks like on the occasions it survives.
4. 4Move to double only for a long caption that genuinely needs air. It costs twice as much and reads loose on a phone screen.
5. 5Check the running total against the 2,200 character ceiling before you copy, particularly if a hashtag block is already taking a slice of it.

What the tool inserts, and what Instagram does with it

The tool does one small thing precisely: it puts a character with no visible shape on the line that would otherwise be empty, so the line has content and the composer keeps it.

• The default separator is U+2800, the braille pattern blank, which is a real character with no mark of its own.
• The alternative is U+00A0, a non-breaking space, for the rare client that draws the braille blank as an empty box.
• Single spacing puts one separator line between paragraphs and double puts two.
• The separator always sits on a line by itself, never beside a word, so it cannot break a hashtag or a mention.
• Existing blank lines and separators from an earlier run are cleared before the new ones go in, so pasting the output back in does not double the gaps.
• A ten paragraph caption spaced twice over spends eighteen characters on whitespace, which is worth knowing before the hashtags go on the end.
• Trailing spaces are stripped from the end of every line, because a line ending in a space is the other quiet way spacing breaks.
• Comments take the same treatment, which is useful for a pinned first comment carrying the links the caption cannot.

How a spaced caption collapses

The caption you wrote in four paragraphs publishes as a single block, and you tend to find out after posting, because the composer shows your spacing right up until the moment it is saved.

• An empty line has no content, so anything that trims whitespace removes it and joins the paragraphs on either side.
• Returns typed into the app's own field often look fine as you type and collapse on publish, which is why this happens to people who checked.
• Editing the caption in the app after pasting can strip the separators again, so make the change here and paste the whole caption a second time.
• A hook and a call to action fused into one block waste the only part of the caption on screen, because a wall of text is a poor use of the first line.

When to leave the spacing alone

Spacing is a workaround for a composer's behaviour rather than a style, and it is easy to overuse once a tool has made it free to add.

• One line of space between paragraphs is plenty; the double gap reads as padding on a phone.
• A three line caption does not need paragraphs at all.
• The characters are real and come out of the caption budget, which matters most when a hashtag block has already taken a chunk.
• If a caption depends on its layout to make sense, the layout is doing work the writing should be doing.
