How this is worked out
0 interactions ÷ 10,000 followers × 100 = 0.00%
Below the typical range
Typical for this platform is 0.5% to 1%. Instagram engagement by followers typically lands between 0.5% and 1%, and drifts down as an account grows.
Your own trend over time is a better signal than any published average. Track the same formula month over month rather than switching between them.
How to calculate your Instagram engagement rate
Instagram keeps the numbers you need on the post itself rather than in the profile summary, and only on a professional account. Two of the four interactions are private metrics, which is why your own figure will not match what an outside tool reports about you.
- Switch to a professional account if you have not already. Personal accounts do not expose per-post insights at all.
- Open the post and tap View insights, then read likes, comments, saves and shares.
- Note Accounts reached on the same screen. That is the reach denominator, and it is the audience Instagram itself credits the post with.
- Enter your follower count, prefilled here at 10,000 as a worked example, along with the four interaction figures.
- Switch the denominator between followers and reach and look at both results. Quote whichever matches the person you are talking to.
- Repeat across your last nine to twelve posts and average them, or one Reel that travelled will define your whole profile.
The exact sum this calculator runs
The division is deliberately visible. Likes, comments, saves and shares are added together, divided by whichever audience you chose, then multiplied by 100. No interaction is weighted above another, because no platform publishes weights you could reproduce.
- By followers: likes, comments, saves and shares added together, divided by followers, times 100. On the 10,000 followers this page starts from, the 0.5% to 1% band works out at 50 to 100 interactions on a post.
- Reach is usually a fraction of your follower count, so the same post can read 0.8% by followers and 4% by reach. Neither figure is wrong; they answer different questions.
- Saves and shares are private metrics that only you can see. Any third-party tool quoting a rate for your account is working from likes and comments alone, so its number will sit below the one you calculate here.
- Averaged across posts: the same sum run per post and then averaged, which is the only version that describes an account rather than a single upload.
- Instagram publishes no official engagement rate. Every figure in every benchmark report is somebody’s convention, usually undisclosed, so the label describes a method rather than a metric.
The comparison that makes the number meaningless
The comparison that wastes the most time comes off a brand deal spreadsheet. Agencies and media kits often quote Instagram rates computed against reach, or against likes and comments only, and neither measures what a follower-based number measures. Put a 4% reach-based figure next to your 0.9% follower-based one and you conclude your account is failing, when the two were never counting the same thing in the first place.
What the rate will not tell you
An engagement rate is a ratio, and ratios flatter small accounts. Four hundred followers who are mostly friends will beat forty thousand strangers on this measure every time, which is why brands increasingly ask for reach and saves instead of a percentage. Treat the rate as one input into a conversation, not a verdict on the account.
- Write the denominator down beside the number, every single time you quote it.
- Track the same set of posts month to month rather than chasing a published average, because your own trend is the only fair comparison available.
- If you are pricing a brand deal, send reach alongside the rate. Reach is the figure they can turn into a cost per thousand.
You just fixed one post. Now do the month.

Frequently asked questions
How this tool works, what it cannot do, and what happens to what you put into it.
What is a good engagement rate on Instagram?
Instagram engagement by followers typically lands between 0.5% and 1%, and drifts down as an account grows. This calculator marks anything below 0.5% as quiet, 0.5% to 1% as typical, and above 1% as strong, but your own trend over time matters more than any published average.Which formula should I use: followers, reach, or a post average?
By followers is what brands and media kits quote, so use it when you are pricing yourself. By reach is what the platform’s own analytics shows and is the fairer measure of whether a post landed. A post average across your recent posts is the one to use for a profile-level number, because a single viral post distorts everything. Why does my number differ from another calculator?
Because they picked a different formula, a different denominator, or counted different interactions. A tool that divides by reach will always show a bigger number than one dividing by followers. This calculator shows the exact division it performed so you can see which one you are quoting.Should saves and shares count as engagement?
Yes, and they arguably matter most: a save or share is a stronger signal than a like, and most platforms weight them heavily in ranking. They are optional inputs here so you can reproduce whichever definition someone else used.Is my data private?
Yes. This tool does its work in your browser, so whatever you type, paste or upload stays on your device. Nothing is sent to our servers, which is also why it keeps working if you go offline after the page has loaded. Is this really free?
Yes. Every tool here is free with no account, no credit card and no usage cap. They exist so that the people who need our scheduling product find us, which only works if the tools are genuinely useful on their own.Do I need an account?
No. Open the page and use it. An account is only for OctoSpark itself, where you plan, schedule and publish a whole calendar rather than fixing one post at a time. Can I use the output commercially?
Yes. Anything you produce here is yours, including for client and commercial work. We claim no rights over it and we do not watermark it.
