How to resize an image for TikTok

TikTok is a full-screen surface with an interface drawn on top of it. The sizes below are the frame; the usable part of that frame is smaller, and that is what decides where the subject goes.

  1. Start from the largest original you have, not a copy already exported for somewhere else. Every export is another lossy pass and they stack up.
  2. Pick the preset you are genuinely posting to. There are 3 TikTok sizes here, starting with the video / story cover at 1080x1920px.
  3. Choose Cover to fill the frame, which trims the long edge evenly from both sides, or Contain to keep the whole picture and pad the gap. Contain pads white, so a photo destined for a dark layout shows a white border.
  4. If you export JPEG, remember it has no transparency: a logo with a transparent background lands on a white square. That is the one case worth going back for PNG.
  5. Keep the subject in the middle band. The buttons run up the right-hand side and the caption sits across the bottom of a 1080x1920 frame.
  6. Look at the cover as a grid tile as well. Your profile shows a cropped piece of it at thumbnail size, next to dozens of others.

Every TikTok image size, and the ratio each one forces

Three sizes, because there is no banner to fill here: a full-screen vertical frame, a shorter photo post and the avatar.

  • Video / Story cover: 1080x1920px. 9:16 full screen.
  • Photo post: 1080x1440px. 3:4 photo mode.
  • Profile photo: 200x200px, a ratio of 1:1. Displayed as a circle.
  • 1080x1920 is the whole screen at 9:16, and it is used both for the video itself and for the cover frame in front of it.
  • Photo posts are 1080x1440, taller than a square but well short of the screen. A photo post and a cover are not interchangeable files.
  • The 200x200 avatar is the smallest in this family and is drawn as a circle, so a wordmark is unreadable there. Use one letter or a symbol.

What goes wrong when the size is off on TikTok

What breaks on TikTok is almost always composition rather than pixels, because the platform puts its own controls over your image.

  • A cover composed edge to edge: the interface takes the right-hand column and the bottom strip, and both sit on top of your image rather than beside it.
  • A 3:4 photo forced into 9:16: Cover crops the top and the bottom away, and Contain leaves white bands above and below.
  • Text that only reads full screen: the same cover appears as a small grid tile on your profile, where a sentence is a grey smudge.

When resizing is not the answer

A cover is one still frame in front of a video and its job is smaller than it looks: it has to survive being a thumbnail. Nothing here changes what happens after the first second of playback, which is what actually keeps someone watching.

  • If the video was shot at 1:1 or landscape, resizing the cover does not fix the black bands in the video. Re-export the video itself at 9:16.
  • Avoid putting the payoff in the cover. A grid tile is scanned, not read, and a cover that gives everything away removes the reason to tap.

  • What image size does TikTok use?

    The sizes this tool offers are TikTok's own recommendations: Video / Story cover at 1080x1920px, Photo post at 1080x1440px, Profile photo at 200x200px. Picking a preset resizes your image to exactly those pixels.

  • Is my image uploaded anywhere?

    No. The file is read, resized and exported by your own browser using a canvas. It never reaches a server, so there is nothing to delete afterwards.

  • Will resizing make my image blurry?

    Scaling down is lossless-looking; scaling a small image up cannot invent detail, so start from the largest original you have. The tool tells you when your source is smaller than the target.

  • Which format should I export?

    PNG for graphics, text and screenshots; JPEG for photographs, where it is far smaller at the same visible quality. Both are offered after resizing.

  • Is my data private?
